Unterlinden Museum

Housed in a former Dominican monastery founded in 1232, the museum's collection includes examples of Rhenish sculpture and paintings dating from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. However the highlight of the collection is the Issenheim altarpiece, a section of an early 16th-century panel painting by Matthias Grunewald. This masterpiece may account for the museum's claim as one of the most visited museums outside of Paris. The basement includes modern paintings by Picasso, Leger and Vasarely.
